PUBLIC HALL REFURBISHMENT PROJECT – August Update
Dear Gosforth Public Hall User,
Members of the Public Hall Management Committee met with representatives of our builders, Roland Hill, on Tuesday August 18th.
Phase One Progress
External work
The render is now complete. It needs a minimum of 28 days before the paint can be applied. This is specialist paint that bonds to the render and, if applied when the render is ready, chemically bonds to the render providing guaranteed protection for 15 years. Some of the walls have render that has been on for 4 weeks now but others for less time. As such painting is likely to continue into early September. There is a small amount of roof work to be completed (mainly Ridge) which will be done by the end of August.
Internal work
Decoration is well underway with most of the GADS storeroom, Supper Room and upstairs store complete. The heating is now complete and operational. The floors in the Library and old Kitchen have significant areas of concrete / screed failure due to damp. There was no existing damp proof membrane. The construction was flagstones on earth then concrete / screed on top. These damp floor areas have been dug out and we’ll need to apply screed, a self-levelling latex and then a damp proof membrane before floor coverings can be laid. There is also a new fire alarm system to be installed which will be mid September.
Timeline
We hope the Library, new meeting room (which was the old Kitchen), Supper Room and upstairs stores will be handed over to us by end September. Work hasn’t yet started on the Phase 2 extension as priority has been given to completing the Phase One work being funded by Historic England.
