PUBLIC HALL REFURBISHMENT PROJECT – June Update

Dear Gosforth Public Hall User,

Members of the Public Hall Management Committee met with representatives of our builders, Roland Hill, on Friday June 19th.

Phase One Progress

External work: Electricity North West have moved the incoming power supply which in turn has enabled the old Chimney Stack to be taken down, repaired and rebuilt. This was a major outstanding item so we are very pleased this is now completed.

A first lime render has been applied to all chimney stacks. Work on the gutters has been completed. Some timber repairs still need to be made on the roof near the repaired chimney stack. Once this is complete the slates will be replaced. After this the scaffold can be lowered to allow the plasterers to render the outside walls. It is hoped this will start week of June 22nd but it is weather dependent.

Internal work: The lime render plaster is still drying out but decoration has started where possible i.e. a first coat of paint on ceilings and some walls. New window sills are being made in oak but cannot be fitted until all the plaster is dry. Some light fittings, sockets and switches have been fitted. Doors will be fitted in the next two weeks. Central heating radiators are being re-fitted to the Supper Room. Cupboards are being made for the downstairs store room. A new window and hatch is being made for the back corner of the GADS store above the Library. Carpet and paint colours have been chosen for the internal décor.

Timeline: We expect all internal and external plastering to now be complete by the end of July. Phase 2 work on the main hall and extension should start mid-July. The main hall will remain in use to the end of August. In September the main hall will be handed over to Roland Hill. Access to the Library will be through its own door. Access to a toilet designated ‘for all’ will be from the Library. The Library will also be the access route to the new meeting room. The Supper Room will be accessed via the Main Hall front door but a partition behind the stage will prevent access to the main hall itself. If you have any questions, comments or concerns please raise them with Jackie or Karen, or via your Hall User Group contact.

Many thanks
